Is ‘world-class’ Declan Rice the best defensive midfielder on the planet?
Nice read.

Definitely at 22 year on year improving, as long as West Ham remain a top 5 team and see Europe more often, I can´t see him moving soon.

Was Bale really a 'disaster'? 81 goals in 180 game, 2 titles, 4 champs league (including 2 two goals in one of the finals).

Not that shabby.

Yes. Soucek is also in the top 3, Coufal is the best RB in the world and Cresswell the best LB. Moyes is also the best manager in the world. Doris the tea lady also makes the best brew.

I sincerely think he has the claret genes like us.

Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd none of them are guaranteed trophies nowadays.

Maybe his big dream is the World Cup and England caps the Euros etc.

People saying he wants to join his mate Mount is cobblers, they are professionals, not at nursery.

Man Utd wont have a steady ship with Ole for a while.

Mega money could be paid by Real Madrid but look what happened with Bale, a disaster.

What player his age stops off at a West Ham pub on his way home and buys a round for everyone and has a sing song. None. He is claret and blue all day long.

I think he is definitely in the top 3.

There isn't a team in the world right now that he wouldn't improve.

You'll have to forgive Soldo, as he believes his team's favourite player Steve Perryman is a far better player than Rice

Re: Is ‘world-class’ Declan Rice the best defensive midfielder on the planet?
I've read that Chelsea's main concern about Declan was his size.

Which is really odd, as he wasn't the first to be on the small size before his last growth spurt, and not after it.

You'd think that people who make decisions like this would know that.

Comparing Declan to Duncan Edwards??

Fuck me.... good ol Who...

Can you expand?

One has had myth built up around him after dying at aged 21 after 150 games for Man Utd and 18 for England.

The other is 22, played 150 games for West Ham, 27 for England and 3 for Ireland. He has also starred in a Euro Cup final narrowly losing on pens.

Im putting my money on Declan having a more successful career than Edwards.

Well I imagine he will considering Edwards was DEAD at 21....

Look... I never saw Edwards play... I've seen the grainy pictutres og him destroying Germany in their own back yard... i'm only going by the testomonies of people that played with him... saw him... knew him...

I once asked Sir Bobby Charlton to describe how good he was, and sitting in a box overlooking Old Trafford, he turned and looked at the pitch Edwards had once bestrode.

“He was the only player who made me feel inferior,” he said.

“Duncan was without doubt the best player to ever come out of this place, and there’s been some competition down the years. He was colossal and I wouldn’t use that word to describe anyone else. He had such presence, he dominated every game all over the pitch. Had he lived, he would have been the best player in the world. He was sensational, and it is difficult to convey that. It is sad there isn’t enough film to show today’s youngsters just how good he was.”

“When I used to hear Muhammad Ali proclaim to the world that he was the greatest, I used to smile. You see, the greatest of them all was an English footballer named Duncan Edwards,” Jimmy Murphy has said as recalled in the book Manchester United Greats.

“If I shut my eyes know I can see him. Those pants hitched up, the wild leaps of boyish enthusiasm as he came running out of the tunnel, the tremendous power of his tackle, always fair but fearsome, the immense power on the ball. The number of times he was robbed of the ball once he had it at his feet could be counted on one hand. He was a players’ player. The greatest…there was only one and that was Duncan Edwards.”

I once asked Charlton if Moore would have captained England’s World Cup winning side at Wembley on that day in 1966, ahead of Edwards, who would then have been 29? “Probably not,” he replied.

“Duncan had everything,” one eulogy began, around the 50th anniversary of Munich. “He had strength and character that just spilled out of him on the field. I’m absolutely sure that if his career had had a decent span he would have proved himself the greatest player we had ever seen. Yes, I know the great players – Pelé, Maradona, Best, Law, Greaves and my great favourite Alfredodi Stéfano – but my point was that he was better in every phase of the game. If you asked such players as Stanley Matthews and Tom Finney about Duncan their answers were always the same: they had seen nothing like him.”

Terry Venables claimed that, had he lived, it would have been Edwards, not Bobby Moore, who lifted the World Cup trophy as England captain in 1966

Tommy Docherty stated that "there is no doubt in my mind that Duncan would have become the greatest player ever. Not just in British football, with United and England, but the best in the world. George Best was something special, as was Pelé and Maradona, but in my mind Duncan was much better in terms of all-round ability and skill."

So yeah I will keep to my statement that only on WHO will anybody compare Declan with Duncan Edwards...

Superb player, hopefully a 'Hammer for Life'. If not then his transfer value must now be nearer £200m than £100m!

All I know is he's a pleasure to watch every game, has a brilliant attitude on the pitch.

Imagine letting him go as a kid, because you think he wouldn't be good enough..

Re: Is ‘world-class’ Declan Rice the best defensive midfielder on the planet?
I've mentioned the Duncan Edwards comparison before, not that I saw much of Edwards of course. However from what I have seen Declan's size, strength and attributes could possibly be compared. I always felt Roy Keane was possibly the best central midfielder I've seen UK based anyway with most attributes just pipping Vieira for me but both had disciplinary issues. Scholes was a magnificent player but couldn't tackle. Dec is improving and I would take him over the likes of Grealish in a team all day long.

Re: Is ‘world-class’ Declan Rice the best defensive midfielder on the planet?
Yep, he has to be seen as a central midfielder.

It’s great to see. He just looks stronger and fitter than the players he goes up against - he[s 6ft 1 isn’t he - but his presence is bigger than that.

His performances remind me of Viera in his prime - and he’s still got a few years to get to his own prime. Maybe six.

There is talk about building the club around him - and that should certainly be the goal. Cheeky bid for his mate Mason Mount should be the next thing we do in the window - turn the tables a bit.

I love a stat, it is part of my job but the thing that stands out this season is carriers, he is top of both distance carried and progressive distance carried.

Which in real terms means, he has moved the ball forward up the pitch more than ANY other player in the whole fucking league, DM my arse,

sand iron agreed

The goal he scored away in his first ever European game was sublime, world class. If Salah had scored it the media would of drooled over for days and weeks.

He'll get better,I have no doubt he'll be practising his penalties. His free kicks are getting better for sure.
